Tall Ships Ahoy…Weymouth 1987

Like days of old, Weymouth’s harbour occasionally bears witness to the tall elegant masts of those graceful vessels that sail the seven seas.

Such was the case in 1987 when Weymouth hosted the Cutty Sark Tall Ships Race.

In fact Weymouth is the only port to hold this event three times, 1983, 1987 and 1994.

Below are a few, sadly rather grainy photos of the event that I found in an old photo album.

But maybe they’ll bring back some lovely memories…

Enjoy reading a bit of good old Weymouth gossip.

Ever wondered what your Victorian Weymouth ancestors got up to?

Why not grab a copy of my new book Nothe Fort and Beyond to see if they appear on its pages.

There’s a whole kitten caboodle of information of what life was like in Weymouth and Portland during this era.

A time when the area teamed with soldiers and sailors of all nations, their deeds (and misdeeds) filled the local newspaper columns.

From murders, deaths, disasters, suicides, and of course, on a more happy note a few marriages and mysteries.
