Furzy cliff is rather a strange name, I’ve often wondered where it comes from, but it’s a place that we went to as a family fairly often, despite it being a fair old trek from our house. Dad used to tell us to stop moaning, that it would blow the cobwebs away, as we trudged wearily along the old Preston seawall, he was right of course, it always did.
Once we’d finally reached up top, the views down over are stunning.
The top is an area of open land that sits at the end of Preston beach Road. The cliffs themselves below are of a grey, sticky clay, Oxford I do believe, which makes them a destination for fossil hunters, very apt I suppose as we are part of the World Heritage Jurassic Coastline here in Weymouth, they are notorious for landslips though…so beware!.
The beach below them runs from the Oasis Cafe on Overcombe corner, (a great spot for a warm drink on a cold day, or a cold drink on a warm day…nice breakfasts too!!…,) to Bowleze Cove, where the beautiful white Art Deco hotel sits snuggling low down in the landscape.
The open grassy area on top of the cliffs is very popular with the locals, in the summer some prefer the rather more energetic mode of relaxation…
While others like to simply sit and chill somewhat, enjoying the sunshine…
Every morning and evening, without fail, rabbits galore emerge from the undergrowth and sit contentedly munching and observing the observers…
The local rescue services are frequently seen practising their cliff rescue skills here, watched with a great deal of interest by onlookers
Sadly, as nature and landscape dictates, the unstable cliffs are eroding away year by year….
So best enjoy the area while you still can…..
